Sclerotherapy
What is Sclerotherapy?
You look and feel your best when your skin appears healthy. The emergence of varicose and spider veins can cause physical discomfort and make you feel self-conscious and insecure. They are caused by many factors, including heredity, age, weight, and extended time spent standing or sitting. These dark blue, purple, and red veins may be large and protrude (varicose veins) or appear small and thin (spider veins).
If you think you may be suffering from varicose veins or spider veins, Advanced Vein Therapy has highly effective, FDA approved treatments—like Sclerotherapy—designed to give you back your confidence. We perform our procedures in-office for your comfort and convenience, and our goal is to eliminate the appearance of varicose and spider veins so you can love your legs again.
What to expect from your Sclerotherapy visit
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment designed to address spider veins. It involves injecting a sterile, foamy solution into the affected vein with a fine needle. The irritation caused by the solution pushing through the spider vein causes them to shrink. While immediate results are visible, it typically takes multiple treatments before the affected vein closes, and the blood is rerouted. Once the body reroutes blood to healthier veins, the spider vein disappears.
- The Visit: Each Sclerotherapy session typically takes somewhere between 30 to 60 minutes, with little to no recovery time required upon completion. The average patient can resume regular activity immediately after treatment. However, the compression stocking is required for two weeks post-injection for the best results. And while we highly recommend walking after the procedure, high impact activities should be avoided for approximately two weeks.
- Pain Management: Sclerotherapy is a comfortable, non-invasive procedure that allows patients to immediately return to their everyday life after each treatment is completed. In some cases, a mild burning sensation can occur while the foam is being injected, but it typically only lasts for a matter of seconds.
- Aftercare: After the procedure has been completed, minor aching may be experienced in the affected vein. However, most patients are up and walking immediately. In some cases, patients experience tenderness and bruising around the injection site that can last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Anti-inflammatories ( ibuprofen, aleve, etc.) is recommended for any discomfort that may be experienced.
- Results: Most patients report noticing a difference a few weeks after their first treatment. However, results vary from person to person. A typical case of varicose veins requires two to four Sclerotherapy treatments to receive the full effects of the procedure. If there are a large number of veins or the veins are larger than average, more treatments may be required.
